Gertrude Stein and Automatic Writing

Gertrude Stein’s two articles on automatic writing, written while an undergrad:

Normal Motor Automatism, The Psychological Review vol iii 1896

Cultivated Motor Automatism, The Psychological Review vol v 1898

The author alone would make them interesting enough but these are also some of the earliest (and only) experimental studies of automatic writing.

Best quote

Case IV. Male subject, not particularly imaginative and no morbid fears. Thinks he is introspective, but is not quite sure.
